Part of the Decent Homes programme is improvement to wiring for residents' homes.

Signpost logo Signpost Services have worked with Poole Housing Partnership (PHP) and the Borough of Poole for several years now and have built strong relationships with residents  whose homes they have provided responsive repairs, general and electrical maintenance.

They have been around since 1994, beginning as the in-house contractor for Signpost Housing Association, and then expanding to provide maintenance services to local authorities and other housing associations. Signpost Services work primarily in the southwest, specializing in social housing. They currently carry out repairs and refurbishment projects to around 30,000 homes.

Signpost operative working Signpost Services will be providing your electrical improvements associated with the Safe As Houses contract.  Managing Director, Paul Bryan explains, "the programme is to test existing electrical installations within your home and rectify as necessary, which we will be doing from our regional office in Fleetsbridge, Poole. We will be working in conjunction with several other contractors to minimise any disruption to you".

Why bother with all this work?

If the electrics in your home work well, you may be wondering why we are doing this work.

One of the reasons is that we have to test your electrical system at least every 10 years, to ensure it is safe because electric cables do breakdown over time, especially the outer insulation.

Another major reason for the works is for the safety of you, your family and your home. Over the last couple of decades, the number of electrical appliances each household owns has increased dramatically, causing a major shortage of socket outlets and encouraging the over use of "double adaptors".

Over the years additional circuits have been added using surface mounted conduit which can look unsightly, these works are also an opportunity to "chase" the cables into the wall.

Using these adaptors or simply adding additional outlets causes overload to the circuits and increases the potential for an electrical fire.

We are also finding an increasing number of unacceptable DIY electrical works, Picture of unsecured cables on the floor which are of a poor standard and also increase the risk of an electrical fire in your home.

Although these works can be disruptive, we hope you understand that it has to be done to ensure you have a safe, modern home.
